Re: Housing affordability in Alberta and city development cost charges Dear , I am writing to you about my concern for the high cost of housing in Alberta. It has come to my attention that one of the main contributors to the problem of the high cost for new homes is that city development cost charges, fees and levies are far too high. It is also my understanding that part of the reason cities are charging developers these high costs is because the provincial government underfunds the rebuilding of our city infrastructure. I am concerned that these development cost charges make new housing too expensive, especially for first time home buyers. I would like your commitment that you will introduce legislation to provide adequate funding to cities and towns in Alberta to rebuild its crumbling infrastructure. I would like it to be earmarked specifically for that purpose to help rebuild Alberta's infrastructure, and to keep this province competitive. The provincial government should also restrict the amount of fees, taxes and levies cities can charge developers when building new homes. The practice of "double dipping," where cities charge for unrelated infrastructure, should not be allowed under provincial law. The result of this will be an increase in the number of new homes built and lower costs of these homes, making them more affordable for everyone. If you can make this commitment, you will have my vote in the upcoming provincial election. Yours truly,
